Error in committing container in ubuntu:16.04 build

Currently, the builds always fail in the step ubuntu:16.04 . The error is related to "committing a container":

error committing container for step {[...]}: error copying layers and metadata for container "[...]": Error initializing source containers-storage:ubuntu-working-container: error extracting layer "[...]": no such device

a searched for this error which lead me to issues with buildah, see e.g. https://github.com/containers/buildah/issues/974 and a recent https://github.com/containers/buildah/issues/2275 In one of the issues it recommends to update buildah.
