If the correct average is provided, compress() may still
fail if more than the average numebr of entries are added
to an early row (e.g. the first one)

  It should be std::endl. Courtesy of GCC 5-svn, it refuses to compile these.

  Previously, the tests supposed to fail would not have been detected with -DNDEBUG. With this patch we use cerr to report problems and return a nonzero error code on completion.
